Founder, Hammerstone Carpentry for Women
Maria Klemperer-Johnson is a graduate of Stanford University where she studied
computer science and geology. Soon after arriving in Ithaca to attend Cornell
she decided instead to follow her passion for working with wood. In 2002 she
got her first job in construction then went on to learn her trade by working with
several regional companies and builders. Encountering few women in her trade,
she founded Hammerstone Carpentry for Women in 2013. A now thriving
school located in Trumansburg, NY, Hammerstone teaches everything from
basic carpentry and workshops to in depth intensives. They hope to help
increase the nuimber of women in the building trades.
